Kochi to Lakshadweep Seaplane Service Set to Transform Island Travel

Kochi to Lakshadweep seaplane service is set to launch soon, offering faster island travel and exciting tourism packages.

Travel between Kochi and the stunning islands of Lakshadweep is about to become much faster and more exciting. The much-awaited Kochi to Lakshadweep seaplane service is expected to begin operations soon, bringing a completely new travel experience for tourists visiting the islands.

The commercial seaplane service, operated by Skyhop Aviation, recently brought its aircraft to Cochin International Airport Ltd after receiving approval from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Trial operations are currently underway, and the final launch is expected shortly after regulatory clearances are completed.

This new development is considered a major milestone for tourism and regional connectivity in India.

India’s First DGCA-Approved Commercial Seaplane Service

The upcoming service from Kochi marks India’s first DGCA-approved commercial seaplane operation. The aircraft being used is the Canadian-made Viking DHC-6-400 Twin Otter, a well-known amphibious aircraft capable of taking off and landing on water without requiring a traditional runway.

Features of the Seaplane

  • Capacity for around 19–20 passengers
  • Water take-off and landing capability
  • Faster access to remote islands
  • Comfortable short-distance travel option

The seaplane will connect Kochi with several beautiful islands in Lakshadweep, including:

  • Kalpeni
  • Chetlat
  • Agatti
  • Kavaratti
  • Kiltan
  • Kadmat

At present, reaching Lakshadweep by ship can take anywhere between 14 and 20 hours. With the seaplane service, the journey time is expected to reduce to less than 90 minutes, making island travel significantly easier for tourists.

Tourism Industry Already Seeing Huge Interest

Travel companies and tour operators have already started promoting Lakshadweep tourism packages that include seaplane transfers. With Lakshadweep becoming one of India’s most talked-about island destinations, the new air-water connectivity is expected to boost tourism even further.

Several travel packages have already been announced, with starting prices ranging from ₹44,000 onwards. Premium packages with deluxe stays, sightseeing, and seaplane transfers are also being marketed by major tourism operators.

Some luxury packages reportedly start around ₹69,000 for a 3-night and 4-day Lakshadweep holiday experience.

Expected Ticket Prices and UDAN Subsidy Benefits

While the final airfare has not yet been officially confirmed, the estimated one-way ticket fare between Kochi and Lakshadweep is expected to be around ₹12,000.

However, there is good news for budget travelers as well.

Possible Fare Reduction Under UDAN Scheme

If the project is included under the central government’s UDAN scheme, ticket prices could become much more affordable.

Under the UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) initiative launched by Narendra Modi in 2016, regional air connectivity is promoted through subsidized fares.

With subsidy support, a limited number of seats may be available in the ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 price range.

This could make Lakshadweep more accessible to regular domestic travelers instead of only premium tourists.

Joint Venture and Future Expansion Plans

The seaplane project is reportedly being operated as a collaboration involving SpiceJet and Cochin International Airport authorities. Officials have also hinted that more seaplane routes within Kerala may be introduced in the future.

Possible future destinations include:

  • Wayanad
  • Idukki
  • Kochi backwaters and lake tourism sectors

Kerala had already approved 48 seaplane routes last year to improve tourism connectivity between dams, lakes, and popular attractions.

Several aviation companies have reportedly received permission to explore these operations.

Kerala’s Earlier Seaplane Attempts

Interestingly, Kerala experimented with seaplane tourism much earlier.

Back in 2014, during the government led by Oommen Chandy, a test seaplane operation was successfully conducted between Kochi backwaters and other destinations.

However, the project faced opposition from local fishing communities, and the initiative was eventually discontinued. The aircraft later remained unused for years before being sold.

Now, with improved tourism demand and better planning, authorities are hopeful that the new seaplane service will succeed.

Trial Flights Already Conducted

Trial operations have already been carried out in Kerala waters. One notable test flight took place between the Bolgatty backwaters in Kochi and Mattupetty Dam in Idukki during November 2024.

These successful demonstrations have increased confidence in launching regular commercial services soon.

Officials from Cochin International Airport Ltd have stated that domestic Kerala routes may also begin after the Kochi-Lakshadweep sector becomes fully operational.

A New Era for Lakshadweep Tourism

The upcoming Kochi to Lakshadweep seaplane service is expected to completely change how travelers reach the islands. Faster travel, scenic aerial views, and easier accessibility could make Lakshadweep one of India’s top island tourism destinations in the coming years.

For travelers looking for a unique and premium experience, the seaplane journey itself may soon become one of the highlights of visiting Lakshadweep.
